How To Have An Unplugged Wedding
Everyone wants that Insta-worthy photo of you guys during the ceremony. And I mean, I can’t blame them! But what if you want everyone to be present with you in the moment? The solution might be to have an unplugged wedding.
What is an unplugged wedding?
An unplugged wedding is when you ask your guests to put away their devices for the ceremony (aka an unplugged ceremony) or for the wedding, which includes both the ceremony AND reception.
Why have an unplugged ceremony?
By far the more popular of the two, an unplugged ceremony allows your guests to focus on you as you commit your lives to each other but have their phones ready for your first dance, cake cutting, etc.
A side benefit of an unplugged ceremony is that no one’s view is obstructed, especially your wedding photographer!
By asking your guests to put down their devices and enjoy the moment, it allows you to walk down the aisle and see all the smiling faces of your loved ones smiling at you instead of looking at the backs of a bunch of iPhones.
How To Have An Unplugged Wedding
If you’ve decided to have an unplugged wedding (ceremony) with more smiles and less technology, here are 6 ways to gently ask your guests to put away their phones:
Put up a cute sign.
Put the message in your wedding program or your invitations.
Ask the officiant/MC to announce it before the ceremony starts.
Remind people that you have a photographer documenting the moments for them.
Share your digital wedding gallery after the wedding (or include the URL in your thank-you cards!).
Set aside a few minutes for everyone to capture a photo of the happy couple with their phones, ideally after your wedding photographer has captured your photos.
Pro Tip: Even with the above 6 steps, there will always be the odd guest who will not adhere to the unplugged ceremony request.
